CARVIN

Frequently asked questions

15 answers on the service, data, payment, and API

General

  • How are you different from Carfax directly?
Carfax only covers the US and won't onboard small clients (you need a $5–20k/mo deposit and a US legal entity). We aggregate Carfax + Korean Encar + Russian GIBDD + UAE EVG — one interface, payment in tenge.
  • Why these specific countries?
50% of imports into Kazakhstan are Korean cars (Hyundai, Kia, Genesis). A lot from the USA (Toyota, Honda, Tesla) and Russia (Lada). Japan, China, UAE are growing segments. We cover what people actually buy.
  • What about cars from Kazakhstan itself?
Kazakhstan has no public VIN lookup API (eGov.kz is web-only with CAPTCHA). So the report includes direct links to eGov, MVD KZ, and Qoldau customs — free. Paid history we provide by country of manufacture.
  • Is there a mobile app?
The site works as a PWA — add carvin.app to your iPhone/Android home screen and it opens like an app, without browser chrome. Native App Store / Play Market app — coming in 2026.

Data & sources

  • How do you guarantee data is current?
All sources are official government databases or their accredited resellers. Carfax updates daily, Encar Inspection is a Korean-law-required document. No scraping, no proprietary databases.
  • What's in the Premium report?
Carfax + AutoCheck (accidents and service), real mileage with rollback detection, owner history and usage type (private/taxi/rental), Copart and IAAI damage photos, NICB theft check, salvage/flood/lemon flags via VinAudit.
  • Can I order history by license plate?
By Kazakh plate — no, Kazakhstan has no public plate→VIN lookup API. If you know the VIN — check by VIN. If only the plate — try eGov.kz or the CSC in person.

Payment & plans

  • What payment methods do you accept?
Kaspi QR in the app, Kaspi invoice to your phone number, bank card via Polar.sh (Visa / Mastercard). Access opens automatically after payment.
  • Can I get a refund?
If the report had a data error on our side — yes, 100% refund within 7 days. If the report showed clean history but the car turned out problematic — that means data wasn't in the sources, the report was generated correctly, no refund. Everything is transparent — the report shows which sources we called.
  • Is there an API for dealerships?
Business plan includes 1,000 requests/month via REST API. Docs at /docs/api (coming soon). For large networks — Enterprise with white-label and custom integrations.

Technical

  • How long does a report take?
Free preview — 1–2 seconds. Full report — 30–90 seconds (parallel requests to Carfax + AutoCheck + Copart, plus PDF generation).
  • Does it work with VINs from any country?
Any VIN decodes (NHTSA vPIC + vindecoder.eu fallback for Europe and Asia). Full history is available for USA, Korea, Russia, Japan, and China. For other countries we show government linkouts.
  • What if the VIN is shorter than 17 characters?
Modern VINs are always 17 characters (ISO 3779 since 1981). Shorter means either an old car (pre-1981, VIN links won't help) or a typo. Compare it to what's stamped on the body and registration.

Legal

  • Where can I find the VIN on the car?
    1) Under the windshield on the driver's side — a plate visible through the glass. 2) On the driver's door frame — a sticker. 3) In the registration / SVR / Title. 4) On the engine block (stamped in metal). On the Kazakh SRTS — the "Body number" field.
  • Who can see my reports?
Only you (after sign-in). We don't share data with sellers and we don't show who checked a specific VIN. Provider responses are cached per VIN for 14–60 days so re-requests from the same user are cheaper.
