1999-2006 BMW 3 Series Ignition Coils Replacement

This tutorial will focus on the replacement of the six ignition coils of the 3 Series BMW (1999-2006) due to engine misfires. Some reasons for engine misfires can include rough idling and late shifting. The BMW series 3 (1999-2006) also needs regular replacements for the car’s ignition coils. BMW recommends replacing these ignition coils every 100,000 miles for non-turbocharged vehicles and every 45,000 miles for turbo-charged vehicles. With the help of this tutorial, you will have no problem keeping your BMW 3 series running smoothly and at its optimal performance.

  • Release the hood latch by pulling the lever found in the driver foot well.
  • Open the hood.

  • Remove the oil cap and note the four bolt placements.

  • Using a 10 mm socket wrench, remove the four bolts holding down the engine covers.

  • Note the placement of each ignition coil then remove the plastic latch and disconnect each cable.

  • With a firm grip, remove each ignition coil and replace with the new coils respectively.
  • Repeat steps 4 to 1 for reassembly.
