2008-2013 Volvo V70 (pre-facelift) Xenon Headlight ballast Replacement

This guide shows how one can remove the ballast from the headlight unit for the xenon headlights of the third generation Volvo V70.

This might fix an issue where the headlight turn off a while after starting the car, while being on in the first place. The car's computer gave a headlight error which did not comeback after this replacement.

It is presupposed you have been able to remove the headlight unit from the car.

Step-by-step instructions

Remove the bulb cover to gain acces

  • Loosen the clips (marked red) holding the cover to access the back of the bulbs.
  • Loosen the steel clamp (marked orange) by pulling it towards you.
  • Remove the back cover.

Make space

  • Allow the cable connecting the xenon bulb to the ballast to move freely by removing it from under the plastic retention clips. Be careful not to break them.

Unscrew the ballast

  • Unscrew the three phillips screws holding the ballast in place.

Unplug the ballast

  • Unplug the two cables connecting the ballast to the headlight unit.
  • The plug connecting the yellow-black cable to the ballast is held in place by a catch (marked in red). Press this inwards in order to release the plug.

Conclusion

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
