2013-2017 Honda Accord Car Battery Replacement

Replacing the battery in a 2013-2017 Honda Accord is a simple maintenance task that most vehicle owners can complete with basic tools and careful attention to safety.

Over time, car batteries lose their ability to hold a charge, leading to slow starts or a vehicle that won’t start at all. This manual provides clear, step-by-step instructions to help you safely remove the old battery and properly install a new one, ensuring reliable performance and preventing electrical issues.

Before you begin the repair, turn off your car and put it in park.

1
  • Park your Honda Accord on a flat surface (preferably a garage with enough space), turn off the engine completely, and push the button on the lower left-hand corner to open the hood. Have the hood opened and secure it with the prop rod. Find the battery which is located on the driver’s side of the engine bay.

  • Locate the positive and negative terminals on the battery. The positive terminal is marked with a plus sign and typically has a red cover, while the negative terminal is coded in black and marked with a minus sign connected to the vehicle's frame. *Always plan to remove the negative terminal first to reduce the risk of electrical short circuits.*

  • Using a 10mm wrench or socket, loosen the nut on the negative (black) terminal clamp. Carefully lift the cable off the battery post and move it aside, ensuring it does not touch the battery or any metal components while you work.

  • Locate the red protective cover on the positive terminal. Loosen the 10mm nut and remove the positive cable from the battery post. Move the cable safely out of the way so it cannot accidentally reconnect.

  • Locate the metal hold-down bracket securing the battery in place. Use a wrench (10mm) or socket to remove the one bolt on either side of the bracket. Finger loosen the other side. Once the bolts are removed, lift the bracket out and set it aside for reinstallation later.

  • Firmly grasp the battery and lift it straight up out of the battery tray, keeping it level as you remove it. Car batteries are heavy, typically weighing 30–40 pounds, so lift carefully. Place the old battery in a safe area and recycle it at an auto parts store.

  • Place the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one, ensuring the terminals are positioned correctly. Reinstall the RED (POSITIVE) BOLT FIRST and tighten so you can screw the black (NEGATIVE) bolt after. Make sure both connections are snug, but avoid over-tightening.

  • Finally, Reinstall the hold-down bracket and tighten the bolts securely so the battery does not move. Close the hood and start the vehicle to confirm the installation was successful.
