A weak or dead battery can prevent your 2017 Honda HR-V EX from starting, leaving you stranded unexpectedly. Replacing the battery is a straightforward maintenance task that most vehicle owners can complete with basic hand tools. This guide will walk you through safely removing the old battery and installing a new one while avoiding common mistakes.

The 12-volt battery provides the power needed to start the engine and operate the vehicle's electrical system. An illuminated battery warning light, sudden startup problems, slow engine cranking, and repeated clicking when trying to start the vehicle are all signs that the battery's losing its ability to hold a charge.

Before beginning, make sure the vehicle is completely turned off and parked on a level area. To lessen the chance of an electrical short, disconnect the battery's negative (-) terminal before the positive (+) connector. The battery weighs around 30-50 lbs (14-23 kg), use safe lifting techniques, or seek assistance if necessary.

Step-by-step instructions

Press the ENGINE START/STOP button to turn the vehicle completely off.
Open the driver’s door and pull the hood release lever until you hear the hood latch release.
Move towards the front of the vehicle and lift the hood.
Raise the hood completely and attach it with the hood support rod before proceeding to the next step.

Locate the vehicle’s battery in the engine compartment.
The positive (+) battery terminal on the left side of the battery.
The negative (-) battery terminal on the right side of the battery.

Do not allow the negative battery terminal to come into contact with the positive (+) terminal or any metal objects while it is detached.
Use a 10 mm combination wrench to loosen the nut fastening the negative (-) battery terminal clamp.
Lift up and gently move the negative battery terminal connection away from the battery.
Carefully detach the negative (-) terminal connector first to prevent an electrical short.

Lift the plastic cover away from the positive (+) battery terminal.
Pull the cover back, displaying the terminal clamp and securing nut.
Use a 12 mm combination wrench to loosen the nut fastening the positive (+) battery terminal clamp.
Lift up and gently move the positive battery terminal connection away from the battery.
If terminal does not come off easily, gently wiggle the connector while pulling upwards. Do not try to force it.

Battery weighs approximately 30-50 lbs (14-23 kg). Use proper lifting techniques or ask for assistance if needed.
Grasp the battery firmly using both hands and gently lift it straight up out of the battery tray.
Carefully insert the new battery into the battery tray, making sure it is correctly placed in the same position as the old battery.
Ensure both the old and new battery remain upright to prevent any battery acid leaks.

Slide in battery insulation sleeve onto the new battery.
Remove the plastic caps from the battery terminals.

Inspect both terminal clamps for corrosion and buildup. Clean them with a battery terminal cleaner or replace them if necessary.
Do not connect or make metal contact with the negative (-) terminal until the positive (+) terminal is fully connected and secure.
Reconnect the positive (+) terminal first.
Press the terminal clamp fully onto the battery post.
Slide the positive (+) terminal block over the terminal clamp screw.

Tighten the terminal clamp nut securely using the 12mm combination wrench.
Close the protective plastic cover over the positive (+) terminal.

Reconnect the negative (-) battery terminal by placing the terminal clamp over the battery post.
Tighten the terminal clamp nut securely using the 10mm combination wrench.

Verify that both battery terminals are secure and do not move.
Lower the hood support rod and close the hood.
Press the ENGINE START/STOP button to start the vehicle. Verify that the engine starts normally, and that the battery warning light is no longer illuminated.
